How do you manage stress?
Wow, what a wonderful question! How do I manage stress? Honestly, it depends on who is giving me stress, what situation I am dealing with, and how dramatically my mind has decided to react to it! 😀😜 Sometimes, a small problem feels like a mountain, while on other days, I surprise myself with how calmly I handle something difficult.
Over the years, I have realised that I don’t have one fixed formula for managing stress. I have my own little collection of coping mechanisms, and each serves a different purpose.
1. Talking to my friends
If you ask me, this is one of the best ways to deal with stress. Sometimes, I don’t need anyone to solve my problems. I just need a friend who will listen patiently while I explain the same situation from five different angles! A good conversation can make a heavy heart feel lighter, even when the problem remains unchanged.
“Sometimes, we don’t need someone to fix our world; we just need someone willing to sit with us in it.”
2. Reading books
Books are my little escape routes. When life gets overwhelming, I love entering a world where my worries can take a back seat for a while. Reading *The Alchemist* by Paulo Coelho reminds me to trust my journey, while *Eat That Frog!* by Brian Tracy reminds me that tackling one difficult task can be better than worrying about ten unfinished ones.
3. Sleeping
Well, sometimes, my mind needs a break, and sleep becomes my favourite reset button! I have learnt that everything doesn’t need to be figured out before bedtime. Some problems look a little less frightening after a good night’s rest.
4. Retreating into my cave
There are times when I prefer my own company. I step away from the noise, reflect on what happened, understand my emotions, and think about how I want to handle the situation. My little cave isn’t about running away; it is about returning with a clearer mind.
I also find comfort in writing down my thoughts, taking a short walk, breaking overwhelming tasks into smaller steps, and reminding myself that I cannot control every situation or everyone’s opinions.
Most importantly, I am learning that setting boundaries is also a form of stress management. I don’t have to carry every problem, please everyone, or explain every decision I make.
After all, “Stress may knock on my door, but it doesn’t get to choose the furniture!”
5. Getting Creative
Sometimes, the best way to quiet a noisy mind is to give it something beautiful to create. I find joy in writing, designing, and exploring creative ideas. Recently, I created a reading journal to track my reading journey, capture my thoughts, and make every book feel a little more special. What began as a creative project became another way to slow down, focus on something I love, and give my mind a refreshing break from everyday worries.
I have realised that creativity doesn’t always have to produce something extraordinary. Sometimes, the simple joy of creating something with our own hands is enough to make a difficult day feel lighter.
“When life feels overwhelming, create something that reminds you how much beauty you can still bring into the world.”
A thought to ponder
Are we exhausting ourselves trying to change our circumstances, or are we sometimes forgetting that we can change how we respond to them?
Perhaps managing stress isn’t about having a life without problems. Perhaps it is about knowing when to talk, when to read, when to sleep, when to step back, and when to remind ourselves that we are human beings, not machines designed to function without a pause.
