What’s a song that changed your life?
If someone asked me to name one song that changed my life, I would probably stare at them for a moment, mentally scroll through my playlist, and conclude that this is an unfair question. How can I choose one song when my life has had so many soundtracks?
Honestly, I don’t think there is a single song that changed my life. But there are countless songs that have changed the way I feel about a particular moment.
Some songs are like old friends who know exactly when to show up. Others are like uninvited guests who arrive at midnight, bring along a suitcase of memories, and refuse to leave until you have replayed your entire life.
“Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam” from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has its own magical place in my heart. It takes me to a time when love stories were innocent, romance was beautifully dramatic, and a mustard field could apparently solve almost every emotional problem.
Then there is “Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana” from Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. That song doesn’t simply play; it arrives with an emotional background score of its own. Suddenly, even an ordinary evening feels like a scene from a film where the protagonist has something important to confess.
And then come the Kannada songs I cherish, each carrying its own fragrance of nostalgia, familiarity, and belonging.
I have a special fondness for songs from the 80s and 90s. Those melodies have a charm that refuses to grow old. They don’t need fancy arrangements or complicated explanations. A few familiar notes are enough to transport me to another time.
“Some songs don’t change your life; they simply remind you of the beautiful life you have already lived.”
Perhaps that is the real magic of music. It doesn’t always arrive to teach us a lesson, inspire a revolution, or make us a better person. Sometimes, it simply keeps us company while we wash dishes, travel to work, or stare out of a window pretending to be the lead character in a tragic romantic film.
And that is perfectly fine.
A Thought to Ponder
If a song could speak, would it tell you the story of its lyrics—or the story of the person you were when you first heard it?
