What was your first ever videogame?
What was my first-ever video game? Honestly, I have no legendary gaming story to tell. While others were busy rescuing princesses, crossing dangerous bridges, and collecting coins, I was simply trying to understand which button did what!
I wasn’t a video game person as a child. Perhaps gaming and I missed our introduction somewhere along the way. And now? My children play better than I can even pretend to understand. They handle joysticks like professionals, while I hold a controller as if someone has handed me the remote to a spaceship.
“Every generation has its superpower. Mine was surviving childhood without a gaming tutorial!”
Sometimes, I watch my children play. Their fingers fly across the buttons, their eyes follow every movement, and their minds seem to calculate a hundred things simultaneously. Meanwhile, I am still wondering why the character keeps running into a wall.
Apparently, motherhood comes with many unexpected responsibilities, including being defeated by a twelve-year-old without even entering the competition!
But perhaps I haven’t missed much after all. My childhood had its own adventures: outdoor games, scraped knees, endless conversations, and the beautiful art of being bored without needing a screen to rescue me.
“Technology changes the way we play, but the joy of play itself never grows old.”
Today, I may not know how to win a video game, but I know how to cheer for my children, laugh at my own confusion, and occasionally remind them that I have experience in life—even if I have absolutely no experience in Minecraft!
Perhaps one day, they will teach me their favourite game. Until then, I shall proudly remain the family’s most enthusiastic spectator.
A Thought to Ponder
Are we teaching our children how to win at games, or are we also teaching them how to enjoy the game of life?
