Every Reading, A Different Me

Which book have you read more than any other?

Today’s question made me pause for a moment: “Which book have you read more than any other?”

The answer came almost immediately—the Bible.

I’ve read many books over the years, and I genuinely love reading. But the Bible is different. I don’t even know how many times I’ve read parts of it because I keep going back. Sometimes I read it looking for answers. Sometimes for comfort. Sometimes just because I need a few quiet minutes before the day begins.

What’s interesting is that the verses don’t change, but I do.

A verse that meant very little to me five years ago suddenly feels deeply personal today. It’s almost as if life translates the Bible into a language I couldn’t understand before.

The second book would be the Ramayana. I’ve read it more than four times, and every reading leaves me thinking about different people. One time I admired Rama’s sense of duty. Another time I couldn’t stop thinking about Bharata’s humility. On another reading, Hanuman’s devotion stood out more than anything else.

Maybe that’s what timeless books do. They don’t give us new words every time—we bring a new version of ourselves to the same pages.

One verse I often return to is Psalm 119:105:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

And James 1:22 reminds me:

“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.”

One beautiful teaching reflected throughout the Ramayana is:

“Dharma protects those who protect dharma.”
It is a reminder that choosing what is right is not always the easiest path, but it is the one that shapes our character and leaves a lasting legacy.

The more I read, the more I realise that reading sacred books isn’t about finishing chapters. It’s about allowing them to quietly shape the way we think, speak, forgive, and live.

Thought to Ponder

Maybe the books we read again and again are not the ones we understand the best. Maybe they are the ones that understand us best, patiently waiting for us to grow into the lessons they have been teaching all along.
