Stitch by Stitch, Stone by Stone: My DIY Adventures

Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

Some people dream of building empires; I, at the age of 17, dreamt of knitting an entire dress. And not just any dress—a pristine white baptism set for my baby sister. Two months, countless stitches, and a few near meltdowns later, the dress was ready. “Patience is not simply the ability to wait—it’s how we behave while waiting,” they say, and trust me, knitting taught me that better than life itself. On the big day, my sister looked like an angel. I, on the other hand, looked like a sleep-deprived artist who had just finished a masterpiece.

But my DIY spirit wasn’t born in grade 12. It all started in grade 1, under a grand tamarind tree, where my cousins and I decided our three-month-old stray deserved a proper home. We gathered stones, stacked them (with the precision of first graders, of course), and crowned our creation with a hay roof. To us, it was a royal palace. To the dog, it was… suspicious. He sniffed, circled, and finally—after what felt like an eternity—stepped inside. Our joy was boundless! “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling,” and in that moment, we felt like the best little architects in the world.

Looking back, I realize these projects weren’t just about creating things. They were about love, effort, and the sheer thrill of making something with my own hands. After all, isn’t life itself the greatest DIY project? Now, that’s a thought to ponder!

  1. Life is a series of small creations, each holding a piece of our soul. The baptism dress and the stone shelter were more than just projects—they were acts of love, stitched and stacked with care. What we build, even in childhood, carries echoes of who we are. Some create with yarn, some with stone, but all creation is a quiet defiance against time, a way of saying, “I was here, and I cared.”
