Dear Life, I’m on Do-Not-Disturb Mode

Do you need a break? From what?

They say, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But what they don’t say is that Jack, after a certain point, doesn’t just become dull—he starts fantasizing about a deserted island with no Wi-Fi, no emails, and definitely no responsibilities.

I need a break. Not a vacation filled with itinerary stress. Not a wellness retreat that requires me to wake up at 5 AM for yoga. No, I need a real break. A pause button on life. A time-out where my only responsibility is ensuring my pillow remains fluffed.

Imagine this: A day where the alarm clock is thrown out (not metaphorically, but literally). A day where my biggest decision is choosing between sleeping on the couch or the bed. A day where I ignore all calls, except maybe from the pizza delivery guy.

“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax.” — Mark Black.

I want to experience the true art of doing nothing—an art so rare that even an empty chair looks busier than me. I want to stare at the ceiling and analyze its intricate designs as if they hold the secrets of the universe. I want to exist without expectations, deadlines, or surprise meetings that start with, “Just a quick call.”

And as I drift into my much-needed oblivion, here’s a thought:
“Why do we always feel guilty about resting, when even our phones need to recharge?”

  1. I often find I end up using the word ‘productive’ as a stick to beat myself with. Didn’t do enough work today. Didn’t eat healthy enough. Sleep well enough, etc. As you say, there are times when doing nothing is actually more productive. We should see ‘wasted hours’ as not wasted, but instead invested into other things that are important to us.

    1. Yes, sometimes doing nothing provides a fresh perspective on many things. I try this occasionally, though it can be challenging. However, I’ve noticed that the best ideas often emerge when we’re relaxed and give our brains the space to think.😊😊
