From Butterflies to Applause: My Stage Story

Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

Ah, the stage – a magical space where dreams come alive, nerves dance like butterflies, and the applause feels like a warm hug from the universe. For me, it was more than a platform; it was my personal battleground, my launchpad, and occasionally, my comedy club.

They say, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” And boy, did I embody that! For years, I participated in speech competitions, tirelessly crafting every sentence, pouring my heart into every word. Yet, the elusive first prize seemed as distant as the moon. My journey was a testament to the saying, “Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

Grade 7, however, marked a turning point – my first win in elocution. Oh, the joy! That golden moment made every stumble, every second-place finish, and every ‘better luck next time’ worth it. From that day on, I walked onto every stage with a renewed determination, bagging prizes and basking in the applause until college.

Hosting school and college events added another feather to my cap. Little did I know that one such event would change my life forever. I was prepping to co-anchor a college function, nerves buzzing as usual, when I met my co-host – a charming, confident fellow who’d later become my husband. (Some say we didn’t just host the event; we hosted destiny!)

Dance, too, was part of my repertoire. From twirling in school to grooving in college, I discovered the joy of expressing myself without words. These experiences taught me that the stage is not just about applause but about embracing vulnerabilities, learning resilience, and finding your voice – or in my case, rhythm.

“The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.” Reflecting on those days, I realize how much performing on stage has shaped me. It taught me to conquer fear, embrace failure, and most importantly, to laugh at myself – especially when I blanked out mid-sentence or tripped over my own feet.

As I look back, a thought lingers: Life is a stage, and we are all performers. We fumble, we improvise, and sometimes we steal the show. So, the next time you’re standing on your metaphorical stage, whether it’s a presentation, a family gathering, or simply showing up for yourself, remember: The spotlight may wobble, but the show must go on.

And here’s a little something to ponder: When was the last time you stepped onto a stage, real or metaphorical, and gave it your all? If you haven’t yet, maybe it’s time to script your next act.
