If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?
If I could meet any historical figure, it would undoubtedly be Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a man whose wisdom, simplicity, and journey inspire countless lives. Known as the “Missile Man of India,” Dr. Kalam’s life was a testament to resilience, innovation, and humility. His story, from being the son of a boatman in Rameswaram to becoming India’s 11th President and a celebrated scientist, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Dr. Kalam believed in dreaming big and working hard, often emphasizing, “Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.” His thoughts resonate with anyone striving for excellence, reminding us that persistence and action are the keys to achieving greatness.
His books, such as Wings of Fire (an autobiographical account), Ignited Minds, and The Visionary of India, offer invaluable insights into his journey and thoughts. In Indomitable Spirit, he shares his vision for a better nation, emphasizing the role of youth in shaping the future.
In his autobiography Wings of Fire, Dr. Kalam shared profound reflections that continue to inspire generations. He wrote, “We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.” These words underline his belief in the potential of every individual to rise above challenges and contribute positively to society.
Dr. Kalam also offered invaluable lessons about work and office ethics. He believed in working with passion and purpose, saying, “Love your job but don’t love your company because you may not know when your company stops loving you.” He emphasized teamwork and collaboration, often stating that great achievements are possible only through collective effort. He also encouraged leaders to take responsibility, remarking, “If a team fails, the leader should take the blame. If it succeeds, the leader should give credit to the team.”
What sets Dr. Kalam apart is not just his technical brilliance but his ability to simplify profound ideas. His conversations and speeches were always peppered with wisdom. “If you want to shine like a sun, first burn like a sun,” he once said, urging people to embrace challenges as stepping stones to success.
Despite his achievements, Dr. Kalam remained grounded. His simplicity was evident in his lifestyle and interactions with students, whom he regarded as the torchbearers of the nation’s future. He famously said, “The best brains of the nation may be found on the last benches of the classroom,” reflecting his faith in the potential of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.
Dr. Kalam’s life exemplifies that greatness lies in serving others, working with integrity, and staying true to one’s dreams.
