When Some Months Hug You and Others Smack You

What’s your favorite month of the year? Why?

Ah, October and December – the MVPs of my calendar! October isn’t just any month; it’s the month. Why? Well, my firstborn and I share the same birthday, along with my better half celebrating his special day too. Talk about a family combo offer! October in our house is a whirlwind of balloons, cakes, and photo ops where I pretend the gray hairs don’t exist.

And then there’s December – the magical Christmas season. It’s when everything smells like cake, sounds like carols, and feels like Hallmark movies. The twinkling lights and endless excuses to bake cookies (and eat them all) make this month a perfect finale to the year.

But if there’s yin, there must be yang – the dark, chaotic duo of April and May. Why, you ask, do I rank these months at the bottom of my calendar hierarchy? School holidays in South India, my friends! Two months where kids seem to multiply like Gremlins after midnight.

Picture this: your once-tidy house transforms into a war zone of toys, spilled juices, and the persistent chant of “I’m bored!” You suggest a craft activity, and suddenly glitter is your new home decor. You plan an outing, but the sun is so fierce, it feels like you’re auditioning for Survivor: Heatwave Edition.

Yet, I confess, even amidst the madness, there’s a certain charm in these months. Watching my kids laugh, create their mini-disasters, and bond with family reminds me that life is messy, but it’s also beautiful.

So, here’s to all the months we love and endure – and to April and May, may you come with patience… and a lot of air conditioning.
