Do Not Disturb: Recharging Superpowers

Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Picture this: a holiday where the ultimate goal isn’t productivity, errands, or kid-wrangling—it’s purely me-time. Yes, you heard that right! Self-Care Day is all about pressing “pause” on life, especially for those superhero moms balancing work, family, and a thousand tiny disasters every day. They say, “You can’t pour from an empty cup,” but honestly, when’s the last time we even got a sip from that cup before a little voice asked, “Can I have a snack?”—just five minutes after dinner?

Self-Care Day would be a fully customizable holiday—no need for a specific date, just take it when you need it most. Imagine waking up to… nothing. No to-do list, no reminders, no “Mom, where’s my…?” Just sweet, sweet silence. What does your day hold? Maybe a blissful yoga session or meditation class (because, thankfully, someone else is keeping the kids from redecorating the walls). Maybe you’ll indulge in a luxurious spa day. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll dedicate the day to a deeply personal goal: napping. Yes, Self-Care Day is here to remind you that sleep is still a thing.

And it’s a judgment-free day. Order takeout guilt-free, wear those comfy old sweats all day, and spend time doing exactly what you want.

Let me share a story I read once that beautifully captures the spirit of Self-Care Day: Once upon a time, there was a woman who poured her heart and soul into her family. She knew everyone’s preferences, everyone’s schedules, and, of course, where everyone’s socks were. Her own needs, however, stayed firmly on the back burner. One day, she passed away, but even then, she couldn’t help but worry. Surely her family would be in complete chaos without her, right?

A few days after her funeral, her spirit decided to make a quick visit back home. Just to check on things, she thought. After all, who else would know where the extra toilet paper is hidden?

But when she arrived, she was in for a shock. The house was spotless! She floated through the front door, half-expecting a mess, but there was her husband… cooking! And there, helping him, was her daughter, chopping veggies. Her son was packing his own school bag—without asking where anything was! She blinked, baffled, as her family moved seamlessly through the morning, laughing and managing everything without her.

She sank into the sofa, watching. She had spent her whole life devoted to her family’s every need, but in the end, they were managing just fine. Her heart (or rather, her soul) sank. Had I ever really lived for myself? she wondered. Did I ever pause to do something just for me?

At that moment, she realized: taking care of herself was never selfish. It was an act of love, one she should have given herself sooner. Because, as they say, “Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you”—or, as I like to say, “Self-care is giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing and feel amazing about it.”

That’s why Self-Care Day is needed as a reminder for all the selfless souls out there to love themselves a little more. So take the day, disconnect, recharge, and do the things that make you feel alive. Don’t wait until it’s too late to live the life you deserve!

So all of you—especially moms—put down the to-do list and pick up that half-read novel. Kids, take a number and come back tomorrow. The ripple effect of a rested, happy mom? A household that just might not implode.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and appreciate my blog!
