When the Green Dot Goes Missing

Work from home has its own strange magic. You sit miles away from your colleagues, yet they somehow become part of your everyday life. No shared desks, no coffee machines, no office corridors — just screens, chats, and those tiny green dots on Teams that silently say, “I’m here.”

Today was my friend’s last working day.

Till yesterday, everything felt the same. Same meetings. Same “Can you hear me?” moments. Same quick chats between tasks. But today, something felt different. Nothing had changed on the screen — yet everything felt changed inside.

Because today it suddenly struck me.

Tomorrow her green dot on Teams will not appear.

And that tiny realization carried an unexpected heaviness.

“Sometimes the smallest symbols on a screen hold the biggest emotions in our hearts.”

All day I kept noticing that little green circle next to her name, as if it was ticking away its final hours. Funny how we never pay attention to something so ordinary until we know it’s about to disappear.

Work-from-home friendships are unique. You may have never shared a desk or lunch box, but you share deadlines, frustrations, and those secret chats during long meetings that keep you sane.

They are the ones who understand messages like,
“Are you also confused in this meeting?”
or
“Let’s discuss after this call.”

And of course… the unofficial role they play.

The gossip buddy.

“Behind every productive Teams meeting, there is a parallel chat window full of reactions.”

Without them, the day suddenly feels quieter.

Somewhere between replying to emails and pretending to focus on work, the reality finally hit me. Tomorrow there will be no random message from her saying, “Are you joining the call?” or “Did you understand what they meant?”

And unexpectedly… tears rolled down.

Because even though we know we will always remain friends, seeing someone every day — even through a screen — creates a different kind of connection.

Right there in the middle of my workday, my heart quietly wrote this:

Tomorrow your green dot won’t appear,
The screen will glow, but feel less near.
No secret chats in meetings long,
No silent laughs when things go wrong.
A thousand miles yet close we grew,
Work-from-home friendships quietly do.

“Goodbyes in the digital world are strange — the office stays the same, but a small presence quietly disappears.”

This phase is something most of us have gone through many times. Colleagues leave. We move on. New names pop up in Teams lists.

Yet every time someone close leaves, the screen feels a little emptier for a few days.

A little quieter.

A little lonelier.

And yes… the gossip department temporarily shuts down.

But some friendships are not limited by office walls or Teams accounts.

They grow beyond them.

Thought to ponder:

In a world where friendships are built through screens and tiny green dots, maybe the real connection lies not in where we work — but in the people who make our everyday work feel a little less ordinary.
