Horizontal Happiness: The Art of Doing Nothing Gracefully

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

There was a time when my hobbies sounded poetic — reading novels, writing reflections, sipping coffee while contemplating life’s mysteries. Now? My favorite pastime is… taking a nap. And no, I’m not being lazy; I’m being realistic.

Once upon a time, sleep was something I fought against as a child — “Five more minutes, Mama!” meant five more minutes of play. Now, it means five more minutes of peace before the world starts demanding things.

Some people meditate to find calm. I close my eyes and drift into a parallel universe where deadlines don’t exist, kids don’t argue, and the laundry magically folds itself. “Sleep is the best meditation,” said Dalai Lama, and I couldn’t agree more — though I’m sure he didn’t have three kids shouting, “Mom, where’s my shoe?” as his alarm clock.

A nap, for me, isn’t just rest — it’s rebellion. It’s the art of pausing in a world that glorifies hustle. My reading list now sleeps beside me on the nightstand, and my journal? It’s patiently waiting for a dreamy update: “Dear Diary, today I napped like a queen.”

Funny thing is, naps come with their own suspense. Will it be ten minutes or two hours? Will I wake up refreshed or questioning what century I’m in? Yet, no matter how it ends, it’s always worth it.

“People say you can’t buy happiness,” I say, “Try buying a comfy pillow.” 😅😅

Thought to Ponder:
Maybe the real luxury isn’t in having free time — it’s in having restful time. After all, even our dreams need space to breathe. So if you catch me dozing off, don’t wake me — I’m just chasing peace, one nap at a time. 🌙💤

  1. I totally agree. Early this year, when my mom went through a surgery and was on bed rest, all the house chores were my responsibility. Juggling over them like a mother does, it was tiring, and sleep really became precious. Reading your blog, reminded me that time, though now I am again shamefully up late at night 🙂
