Almost There, Spiritually Present, Physically Napping

What do you do to be involved in the community?

Some people join book clubs, others volunteer at food drives, and a few brave souls run marathons for fun. Then there’s me—a proud member of the Invisible Club of Couch Crusaders, where community involvement means nodding politely to my neighbour while chasing my Wi-Fi signal around the house.

I don’t bake cupcakes for fundraisers. I Google bakery numbers instead.

“Community is like a potluck—you either bring a dish, or you eat quietly and hope no one notices.” — Anonymous Couch Crusader

It’s not that I don’t care. I do! I just care from a comfortable distance—like cheering for your kid at sports day… from the car, with the windows slightly rolled down.

My current form of “giving back” is listening to friends vent over coffee and cracking jokes that make them snort. That should count as therapy, right?

“Socially distant, emotionally present.” — Me, convincing myself I’m still contributing

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I did step out—joined a club, planted a tree, or attended a community cleanup. Then my child asks for help with math homework, and I remember: my community needs me right here… hyperventilating over fractions.

But maybe, just maybe, being part of a community doesn’t always mean being seen. It could mean showing up for people in your quiet ways. Lending an ear. Sending a meme. Sharing a samosa.

Thought to ponder:
You don’t have to hold a banner to belong. Sometimes, being part of a community starts with a smile, a small kindness, or simply being the person someone can call when their Wi-Fi dies and so does their soul.
