What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?
Have you ever been in a situation where you desperately wished you could read someone’s mind? I have — more times than I can count.
Imagine this: My kids are unusually quiet, a rare and suspicious event. I ask, “What’s going on?” and they reply with synchronized “Nothing!” But are they really just being angels, or is there a melted chocolate disaster waiting behind the door? If I could read their minds, I could skip the guessing game and get straight to the truth.
Or take those moments at work when a colleague gives me a vague smile during a meeting. Is it genuine appreciation, silent judgment, or just a polite reflex? If I had the power of mind reading, I could decipher the truth behind the smile — no more replaying the conversation in my head, wondering if I said something ridiculous.
And then there’s the classic scenario with my husband. I ask, “Are you okay?” and he says, “I’m fine.” Oh, the layered complexity of that “fine”! Is it actually fine, or the “fine” that means, I’m upset, but I won’t say it? If I could peek into his thoughts, maybe I’d save us both from hours of the silent guessing game.
I know mind reading might open a Pandora’s box of awkwardness, but just imagine the convenience! As George Bernard Shaw once said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
Thought to ponder: Would the ability to read minds strengthen my relationships or complicate them beyond measure? Would I be ready to hear the truth — unfiltered and raw?

I’ve always wondered which politicians really mean what they say.
