No, Your Luck Won’t Fly Away With the Broom

Are you superstitious?

Superstition is like that nosy neighbor who always has an opinion about your life—often absurd, occasionally amusing, and rarely accurate. From black cats crossing your path to never sweeping the house at night (because, of course, your wealth will fly out with the dust), these beliefs have tiptoed through generations, refusing to retire.

As Mark Twain once said, “Superstition is just another name for ignorance.” But let’s be honest—haven’t we all, at some point, knocked on wood after making a bold statement? Not because we believe in it, but because… well, why take a chance?

I, for one, refuse to believe that sneezing before heading out is a bad omen. If that were true, allergy sufferers would never leave home! And who decided that Friday the 13th is unlucky? Did someone wake up one morning and declare, “Let’s make this an international day of paranoia”?

That being said, superstitions do have an interesting charm. They are like cultural hand-me-downs, often hilarious, sometimes poetic, and occasionally, oddly comforting. Like when grandma warns, “Don’t cut your nails at night, or you’ll invite misfortune,” and you nod respectfully—while secretly reaching for the nail cutter.

But here’s a thought to ponder: If people truly believed in bad omens, why do they still check exam results? Or step on scales after holiday feasts? Now that’s real horror!

So, are you superstitious? No? Well, just in case… knock on wood!
