Life’s a Game—Sometimes a Six, Sometimes a Stalemate

What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Sports have a magical way of bringing people together, whether on the field, across the chessboard, or in front of the TV screen—especially when it’s a five-year-old cricket match replay (Yes, my husband can watch those with the same enthusiasm as a live final!). Thanks to him, I have developed a deep admiration for cricket, a game that is equal parts skill, strategy, and surprise. I may not always understand why a fielder is standing at ‘silly point,’ but I do know that cricket has become an unmissable part of my life.

However, when it comes to playing, my heart belongs to chess and badminton. Chess is where I test my patience, strategy, and ability to think ten moves ahead—although sometimes, I still fall for the simplest traps. “Life is like a game of chess—always have a backup plan, and never trust a pawn too much!” And then there’s badminton, which is my way of staying active while pretending I’m a pro (even if my smashes land in the net more often than not!).

People often talk about the importance of play for physical and mental health, but here’s an aspect no one mentions: playing sports teaches you how to lose without throwing a tantrum (unless you’re playing with your sibling!). It’s a lesson for life—sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.

Thought to Ponder: “Rewatching old cricket matches is nostalgia, but playing a game is creating a new memory. Which one are you doing more?”
