Compassion Next Door: Small Acts, Big Impact

What makes a good neighbor?

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself,” and this teaching resonates across all religions. However, loving your neighbor doesn’t mean invading their privacy or taking them for granted. It means respecting them, as they can become your support system when family or relatives are far away.

I feel blessed to have wonderful neighbors. For instance, there was a time when my daughter came home from school while I was out at the market. My grandmother, who was home, didn’t hear her knocking at the door. My daughter became anxious, but a kind lady from our apartment noticed her distress, comforted her, called me, and took her into her home, where she gave her food and care. It was truly heartwarming.

Another time, my grandmother had a serious fall and was bleeding. In that critical moment, our neighbors rushed to help. They drove us to the hospital, stayed by our side until her treatment was done, and brought us back home.

Neighbors are like extended family. They share in your joys and sorrows.

To me, being a good neighbor means treating them with love, respect, and kindness.
